A long overdue CD edition of Timo van Luijk’s first full-length album, originally released in 2002 as a small private edition LP on La Scie Dorée (Belgium). “Murrille” features a collection of extraordinary “songs” integrating a palette of acoustic instruments such as glass harmonium, flute, hand percussion, as well as voice with real time synthesis. With a host of bizarre inflections and aural investigations, Van Luijk’s music recalls some of the of the great experimentation of early krautrock, otherworldly atmospheres of the infamous Futura label, and a pure love of the moments when it all just falls into place. This newly remastered edition sounds fantastic and includes an additional track not included on the original LP release. Mixed by Christoph Heemann. Packaged in a Japanese style tip-on mini jacket that carefully reproduces the original album artwork. (Robot Records)

AF URSIN : Murrille LP

Af Ursin is Noise Maker’s Fifes related business. It’s the solo project of Timo van Luyk, who has played with Noise Maker’s Fifes and also with Negative Entropy. His own releases are few in number, this might be his second or third release and is presented on his own label. Mixed by Christoph Heeman, the recordings are multi-track pieces of sounds and instruments. Af Ursin stresses to not have used electronics or sampling. Playing all sort of instruments in all sorts of strange ways, Af Ursin’s music can be placed along the lines of people like Nurse With Wound, HNAS or Christoph Heemann. Lot of drumming and strumming going on, mostly densely layered and performed with precise timing. This LP comes in a nice rough board cover and you can be sure if they are sold out, the collectors market will have another classic added to the world of overpriced vinyl. Nice work here. Debut 2002 LP from Timo van Luijk, released in an edition of 540 copies. The music is supremely atmospheric, moving from melancholy music box-style repeat patterns that cast a sad toytown glow over any room you care to spin it in, through hand percussion, flute, vocals, glass harmonium, guitar and what sounds like twin beams of ecstatically charged E-Bow electricity that vibrate somewhere between Fripp & Eno and Faust. The drones are lugubrious and otherworldly, as hands-on and tactile as they are elusive and liminal, somehow reconciling intensely worked-over detail with a spontaneous, rock-informed execution. Mixed by Christoph Heemann. (David Keenan, Volcanic Tongue)
